JOB DESCRIPTION

This RN needs to specialize in vascular access and provides consultation and treatment for specialized IV accesses, such as PICC, midline catheters, and ultrasound-guided peripheral IVs. They follow evidence-based practices and adhere to the California Nursing Practice Act, regulatory requirements, standards of care, and hospital policies. The RN conducts patient assessment, interprets relevant data, provides treatment as requested, and collaborates with patients, nursing staff, and providers. They also coordinate care with other healthcare providers and educate patients and their families on managing their central lines and preventing complications. The vascular access RN is responsible for assessing and inserting the appropriate vascular access for patients who require long-term therapy or are unable to maintain a PIV.

 

DUTIES

  • Assess patients with difficult access or need for long-term IV therapy for appropriate vascular access devices.
  • Works with staff nurses, physicians, case managers, and other team members to ensure early assessment for VAD selection and implementation.
  • Participates in education with Vascular Access education with patients, family members, and staff.
  • Reviews the physician’s order
  • Obtains consent.
  • Reviews medical records for any contraindication of peripheral vascular access
  • Determine the best vascular access device for the patient based on medications, current access status, diagnoses, length of IV therapy, etc.
  • Places Vascular access device, (PICC, Midline, or ultrasound-guided peripheral IV) or recommends alternate means of access.
  • Reports directly to the patient’s primary nurse and charge nurse or physician, if necessary
  • Troubleshoots difficult complications of VAD’s or assists staff in troubleshooting.
  • Declot VAD’s or assists staff as a resource in declotting.
  • Is responsible for all central line dressing changes on a weekly cadence.
  • Documents completely and accurately in the patient’s permanent medical record
  • Evaluates the effectiveness of interventions and monitor patients for adverse responses and side effects.
  • Assesses patient/family level of understanding and documents information on clinical records.
  • Creates and maintains a climate conducive to healing through being present to patients & family, identifying and managing discomforts, and providing emotional support and education.
  • Teaches needed information for self-care and illness prevention to patients and family members.
  • Recognizes and communicates to proper authority ethical and legal issues relative to patient care; completes the incident report.
  • Safety performs all provision of care for any age-related needs of the patients served on the unit, including growth and development principles.
  • Attends meetings and serves on departmental and/or hospital committees as assigned.
  • Works to support the achievement of department strategic and organizational goals.
  • And other duties as required. 


   

 

EDUCATION AND QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

  • National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX-RN) certification
  • A valid nursing certificate, BSN, or MSN degree from an accredited college or university.
  • A valid unencumbered RN license for the State of California.
  • The appropriate license to work in their state/county.
  • BLS certification.
  • Must have at least 12 months of relevant consecutive acute care experience in this specialty.
  • Current vaccinations and health clearance certification.
  • Excellent knowledge of aseptic and sterile techniques.
  • Must have previous experience with starting IVs.
  • High-level interpersonal skills and the ability to connect with patients during stressful experiences.
  • Strong organizational abilities and good communication skills
  • Fluent in English.

COMPENSATION

 

  • $84,000-133,000 Annually
